For this image, I traveled to an outdoor wedding in Shelby, North Carolina, located about 45 minutes west of the city of Charlotte and just at the base of the famed Blue Ridge Mountains near the North Carolina and South Carolina border.
The couple had chosen to get married at the bride's family's home, where she had grown up. Surrounded by agricultural fields of hay with rolling hills, we chose the highest vantage point of the sky and the farm to do some sunset shots before returning to their reception. It was across the street at her aunt's house.
We had waited for several minutes for some of the gorgeous sunset color to paint the darkly clouded sky, but alas, it did not appear that it would happen on this day, as the clouds seemed to get darker by the minute.
But just when you think about packing up, Mother Nature opens the door and colors the sky with hues of oranges, reds and blues as you had envisioned.
Using a off camera flash to the right of the frame, I set exposure for the sky, worked the light to the power I needed and created a wall-worthy couple's portrait to end a glorious wedding day.
