Trustees Fountain at ECU Senior Portrait

This senior image from ECU is a great example of having a photographer that is comfortable using flash to produce the picture you want.

Taken at the Trustee's Fountain on the main campus of ECU, this location is a must-have site for almost all ECU seniors.  It is somewhat of a trademark of the university, a symbol recognized by all.

With bright skies and beautiful clouds that afternoon, it would have been a shame to lose that color by not using flash and simply exposing for the senior while letting the sky become completely washed away.  But we don't have to do that.

Positioned just outside of the frame, I used a 43" white beauty dish and a strobe to light the senior.

I get asked a lot about why I use flash on sunny days.  There's a couple reasons.  First, I never place my clients looking into the sun as this causes "squinty eyes" and that never looks good in photography.

Secondly, and related to the first, I want the images to look like they did when I took them.  I could see the clouds, he could see the clouds, shouldn't you be able to see the clouds?  By exposing for the sky and allowing the clouds and blues to come through and then using flash to light my subject, the resulting image is much more realistic.  In fact, had I exposed for him without flash, I would have lost most of the water from the fountain.

I love creating senior images and have never had a bad senior session!  Seniors always bring such spunk and class that it's impossible to not enjoy them!
