Fort Macon family portrait session

Fort Macon family portrait session

Sometimes, the beach, in all its beauty, just doesn't allow you to use it.

That's what happened on this particular day.  With storms in the area and the winds high, the beach wasn't suitable for pictures.  Luckily, we had chosen Fort Macon Beach access for our location and a quick walk across the parking lot had us at the actual fort and out of the wind.

Fort Macon played a strong role in protecting Beaufort Inlet during the 18th and 19th century - both from pirates and, later, during the War of 1812 and the Civil War.  Hidden amongst the dunes and marsh areas of the coast, the fort has 26 rooms with outer walls being an average of 4 1/2 feet thick.

Today, the fort is part of the North Carolina State Parks system and offer tours and canon and musket demonstrations during certain times.

Overcast skies made backlighting impossible, so I used off camera flash to light this young lady ("Nene" as she was called by the kids).

By placing the flash to the left of the camera with a standard reflector and moving it back to broaden the light at low power, I was able to produce perfect skin tones on Nene and keep the blue sky in the background.

Location: 2303 East Fort Macon Road Atlantic Beach, NC 28512.
